Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment in Toronto

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment?

DLK’s Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment involves collecting a small sample of the patient's blood and using a centrifuge to separate out the plasma and platelet portions. The resulting PRP is then injected back into the skin to stimulate new collagen production and rejuvenate cells. The product used is 100% autologous, meaning it is derived from the patient's own blood, making it a safer alternative to other treatments.

Your blood contains platelets and plasma, which contain growth factors and proteins. Plasma helps your blood to clot while PRP is the substance that promotes healing. It also contains proteins that support cell growth. Injecting PRP into tissues stimulates your body to grow new, healthy cells.

PRP treatment can improve skin appearance in areas such as the face, neck, décolletage, and hands, reduce wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes, and minimize the appearance of facial scars. It has also been clinically proven to treat alopecia (hair loss) in both men and women.

How to Prepare For Your PRP Treatment

Before your PRP treatment, you will have a consultation with the DLK team to narrow down your personal goals and desires, as well as what you should and shouldn’t do before your treatment.

Generally speaking, you should:

  • Arrive for your treatment with clean skin and no makeup on.
  • Hydrate during the days leading up to your treatment.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning before and after your treatment.
  • Arrange to have a ride home if your doctor deems it necessary.

During Your PRP Treatment

DLK’s PRP Treatment occurs in a medically-supervised clinic after a proper consultation. During the consultation, your specific skin concerns and goals are addressed and a customized management plan is formulated. During the treatment, a medical practitioner draws a small amount of blood from your arm into a tube. The tube is then placed into a centrifuge which spins the blood at a very high speed, causing the platelets to separate.

Once the separation is complete, the PRP can be injected into specific sites based on the patient's individual needs.

Post-Op Care and Instructions

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal results and avoid complications following any cosmetic treatment, including PRP treatment.

One of the most crucial post-treatment recommendations is to avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Direct sunlight can cause hyperpigmentation and other skin damage, leading to a compromised treatment outcome. Protect the treated area by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and applying high SPF sunscreen when necessary.

After 24 hours, you may apply light make-up to cover any redness or bruising. Avoid excessive sun or extreme cold at least until any initial swelling/ redness resolves.

It's also important to avoid touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treated area for the first 24 hours. Doing so may lead to an increased risk of infection, irritation, or injury.

Consuming alcohol and caffeine for the first 24 hours after PRP is discouraged as they can dehydrate the skin and slow down the healing process. Drinking plenty of water, on the other hand, can help promote hydration and facilitate tissue repair.

Incorporating a skincare regimen that includes gentle, non-irritating products can help maintain the benefits of your facial injection treatment. Stick to your skincare routine and avoid using abrasive products that may irritate the skin.

It is important to follow these post-treatment instructions to ensure that you receive the best possible results from your PRP treatment. If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to reach out for guidance.

Treatment Schedule

For facial rejuvenation: Three initial treatments, 4 weeks apart.

For hair restoration: Four to six treatments, 4 weeks apart.

Results may vary and can be seen in 3 to 6 months. Maintenance treatment is recommended approximately every 6 months for optimal results.

Benefits of PRP Treatment

Some benefits of a PRP Treatment include:

  • Stimulating wound healing and tissue regeneration.
  • Promoting collagen production to create firmer skin.
  • Reducing the looks of fine lines, wrinkles, and dimpling.
  • Improves signs of aging on the face, neck, decolletage, and hands.
  • Reduces dark circles under the eyes and facial scars.

Side Effects of PRP Treatment

There are very few side effects of a PRP treatment, but some include:

  • Redness.
  • Inflammation/swelling.
  • Slight bruising.

All side effects will subside after a few days. Avoid direct sun exposure, rough skin exfoliants, and rubbing or picking at your face during this time.

Am I A Good Candidate for PRP?

If you are concerned about uneven skin tone, facial scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, or sagging skin, you may be an excellent candidate for PRP. The reduction of collagen in the skin is often the cause of these signs of aging, but PRP can help you achieve a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance.

PRP FAQ

How Long Does a PRP Treatment Take?

On average, the entire process of a PRP treatment takes around one hour. You can return home immediately following the procedure.

What are the Main Causes of Lost Collagen?

Collagen production can be reduced in the skin for a multitude of reasons, including weakening skin tissue, exposure to ultraviolet light, tobacco use, improper gut health, an excess intake of sugar, and natural aging (the most common cause).

How Long Will the Results of my PRP Treatment Last?

One PRP treatment can provide results that last up to a year or 18 months. To maintain optimal results, it is recommended to have maintenance sessions every six months or to combine PRP with another effective procedure, such as microneedling. With proper maintenance, the results of your PRP treatment can last for an extended period of time.

Can PRP Treatment be Combined with Other Cosmetic Procedures?

To enhance the benefits of PRP treatment, it can be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as microneedling. Microneedling involves the insertion of fine needles into the skin to create micro-injuries that trigger the body's natural healing response, leading to increased collagen production and skin rejuvenation. Combining the two procedures can provide a synergistic effect, with each enhancing the benefits of the other.

How Long Does It Take for PRP to Work on Hair?

The duration of results from PRP therapy can vary based on factors such as the severity of hair loss, the patient's overall health, and the frequency and consistency of treatment. On average, patients may notice some initial results within 3 to 6 months after their first PRP treatment. However, it often takes multiple sessions over several months to see significant improvement in hair growth and thickness.

While PRP therapy is considered safe and effective for hair loss, it is not a guaranteed solution. Some patients may not experience significant results, and others may require additional or alternative treatments to achieve their desired outcome.

PRP therapy is a promising option for hair loss, but it's important to approach it with realistic expectations and patience. With proper care, consistency, and guidance from a qualified medical professional, PRP can help regrow a fuller, healthier head of hair.
