Ask a derm…

Q: What are the brown spots on my face, and how can I get rid of them?

A: “There are a number of causes for brown spots,” says Dr. Lisa Kellett of DLK on Avenue ( “The three most common types are sunspots, which are proof of damage to the skin after a sunburn; age spots, which occur naturally as you get older; and pregnancy mask, so-called because the spots are caused by hormone fluctuations. I’d suggest avoiding the sun, as brown spots darken with sun exposure.

A store-bought hydroquinone-based bleaching cream will lighten spots if used daily for about three to six months. (A prescription-grade cream would work more quickly.) A peel will remove the spots, but since you need about six peels for best results, I’d suggest a laser treatment, which is effective in one session.”
