Canadian Women’s Struggle with Body Shape Impacts Overall Outlook on Life

TORONTO, Sept. 27, 2012 /CNW/ – Apples and pears don’t just represent fruit, these are the shapes the majority of women identify their bodies with, according to a new survey of 1,000 Canadian women commissioned by Syneron Medical, the pioneer and market leader in body shaping technologies such as UltraShape® and the globally acclaimed VelaShape® system. The just-released survey found that 65 per cent of women are not at all satisfied with their mid-sections, including their muffin top (48 per cent), their spare tire (47 per cent) and their love handles (39 per cent) 2. Although 71 per cent of Canadian women still found the time to integrate a solution to improve their body shape such as dieting and/or exercise (59 per cent) 3, nearly half (49 per cent) of women would also consider a non-invasive, non-surgical body shaping procedure to address these problem areas4.

“In recent years women in my practice are increasingly concerned about their body shape,” says Dr. Lisa Kellett, dermatologist and founder of DLK on Avenue Cosmetic Dermatology Clinic, Toronto, Ontario. “I believe many Canadian women are proactive in seeking out solutions to maintain a positive outlook when it comes to their body shape. However, despite eating well and exercising regularly, sometimes there are stubborn areas that don’t respond, particularly after having children or losing weight. Women opt for non-surgical procedures to get the body shape they desire

Nearly three times the number of women would prefer a non-surgical procedure over a surgical procedure to target fat pockets on their body (50 per cent vs. 17 per cent)5. Women cite cost (88 per cent), pain (72 per cent) and downtime (71 per cent) as the key barriers to having an invasive surgical procedure to rid fat pockets6, as opposed to a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure such as UltraShape.

The survey was completed using Leger Marketing’s online panel, with a sample of 1,000 Canadian women between the ages of 25 to 60. A probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of ±3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20.1
