Is it really that bad to sleep with makeup on?

By Carly Brown

Going to sleep without cleansing your face is like not washing your hands after you eat. “People touch their face with their hands during the day, so it’s important to wash away bacteria,” says dermatologist Dr. Lisa Kellett of DLK on Avenue in Toronto.

While skipping one night likely won’t wreak havoc on your skin, daily cleansing is paramount for preventing clogged pores, especially for those who wear makeup or are prone to acne. Since not all cleansers are easily tolerated, Kellett recommends an exfoliating cleanser with a non-foaming base. “It won’t be too drying or irritating,” she says. So take those extra few minutes before bed, and wash away your day.
