We all know that consistency is crucial in achieving results or reaching goals. When it comes to obtaining a radiant complexion, consistency and facials go hand in hand.
A single facial might provide temporary hydration and refreshment, but consistent facials are what make a lasting impact.
The frequency of facials is simple: medical grade facials can typically be done every 2-4 weeks, with a series of 6 treatments recommended.
This time frame allows for a full skin cell turnover cycle to occur, which promotes healing and regeneration for optimal results. Over-frequent facials without sufficient time for healing can cause irritation and potentially harm the skin.
However, it's important to note that every individual's skin is distinct and requires a tailored approach for the best results. That’s why following the advice of a dermatologist or medical aesthetician is key.
At DLK, our experts assess each patient's specific skin care needs and create a personalized treatment plan, including the frequency of facials. assess each patient's specific skin care needs and create a personalized treatment plan, including the frequency of facials.
In this article, we will delve into the factors that affect the ideal frequency of medical grade facials, the benefit of regular facials, and how to preserve the results of your skin care investment.
3 Factors That Influence How Often to Get a Facial
Skin Type/Concern
Before anything else, consider your individual skin type and issue. Different skin types respond uniquely to facials, with factors such as dryness, sensitivity, acne, aging, and hyperpigmentation affecting the recovery time and frequency of facials.
While some patients’ skin may require longer than 4 weeks to fully heal, others may benefit from more frequent facials. However, a facial every 4 weeks is usually safe for every skin type.
Type of Facial
Additionally, the type of facial is a significant factor when determining your program.
Medical grade facials can generally be sorted into 4 main categories: Mild/gentle facials, laser resurfacing and light therapy, superficial to medium depth chemical peel, and deep chemical peel.
Mild/Gentle Facial
Mild medical grade facials are gentle on the skin and typically involve microdermabrasion, exfoliation, hydration, and infusion of active ingredients.
These facials usually require about 2-4 weeks to see the results.
At DLK, a great mild facial option is the SilkPeel. Additionally, our favourite facial to offer is the DLK Power Program. This facial gives you the exfoliation benefits of microdermabrasion combined with deep facial rejuvenation, plus the infusion of revitalizing ingredients and healing skin oxidization.
Laser Resurfacing and Light Therapy
Light and laser facials work to improve skin texture, pigmentation, scarring, and can even help tighten skin. Most of these treatments can typically be done 4 weeks apart over a course of 3 months. Again, the exact timing will depend on the individual and the laser used.
Unlike mild facials, some light and laser facials require some downtime. Post-care instructions are always provided to ensure optimal healing and results.
At DLK, a popular light and laser treatment is the Intense Pulse Light (IPL). A series of treatments is recommended every 3 to 4 weeks for the best results.
Superficial to Medium Depth Chemical Peel
A superficial chemical peel exfoliates the upper layers of the skin and uses either alpha-hydroxy (AHA) or beta-hydroxy (BHA) for skin resurfacing. This type of chemical peel can be applied a minimum of 4 weeks apart with 4 to 6 applications.
Medium-Depth Chemical Peels reach the deeper layers of the skin by using glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid (TCA). This chemical peel is more intense, requiring a minimum of 4 weeks to several months, depending on the individual's sensitivity and skin type.
We offer a few epidermal peel at DLK: the DLK Acne Peel and DLK Brightening Peel. These peels require 4 to 6 days of downtime and about 4 weeks between treatments. For ideal results, an epidermal peel is suggested in a series of 3 to 6.
Deep Chemical Peel
Finally, a deep chemical peel usually involves using a high concentration of TCA to effectively treat the skin. This type of peel is the most powerful and results in downtime which may include flaking and peeling.
While it requires more recovery time, a deep chemical peel can be performed every 4 to 7 weeks, depending on the individual's skin response. Some patients may require longer intervals between treatments.
Why Get Regular Facials?
While a single facial can bring temporary radiance, consistent facials produce longer lasting and more effective results while addressing specific skin issues.
Each facial builds on the results of the previous session, making regular facials the better choice. The frequency can be adjusted depending on skin type and concern, but it all comes back to consistency with your treatments and maintenance treatments.
How to Maintain the Results of Your Facials
Finally, the benefits of facial treatments will only be sustained with proper post-care.
The key to skincare: always use a high-quality facial sunscreen and apply it generously.
Investing in medical-grade skincare products can help preserve and even enhance the results of your facials.
Remember, skincare is also a long-term commitment, and scheduling maintenance treatments to keep your skin looking its best is always a good idea.
